Tiny pink flower sprays bloom late summer–fall, but grown for its indigo dye-producing leaves. Yellow and green dyes can also be made depending on method.
Limited availability (partial crop failure).
Main source of indigo in East Asia before the more concentrated indigo of the Indigofera species began to be imported from South Asia. Suited for temperate climates, it likes fertile soil, heat, humidity, and lots of water. Not hardy in Minnesota.
