Native to Southeast Asia’s humid lowlands, this lush tropical plant has small pink to magenta two-petaled flowers and a lot of magenta dye hidden in its green leaves.

Extracted from the leaves by boiling, the flavorless dye is used to color food, particularly Vietnamese taro-filled cakes and glutinous rice desserts. Does best in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Roots easily from cuttings without rooting hormone. Treat as an annual here.
